How much a balikbayan box costs: posted prices by country, and every line on the bill

A medium sea balikbayan box to Metro Manila is posted at £75 from London, AUD 110 from Sydney, AED 185 from the UAE, S$105 from Singapore and SAR 250 from Riyadh, on the couriers’ own price pages checked on 19 October 2026. None of the US box couriers checked posts a current flat box price: LBC USA and Manila Forwarder price through online booking and a calculator, Forex eShip posts box sizes only, Atlas Shippers quotes by agent, and Manila Forwarder’s flat-rate table carries a posting date of 1 November 2021 (Southern California only). The one government line on top is the Bureau of Customs processing charge of ₱125 per house bill of lading (CAO 01-2018 §4.9).

A London Medium costs £75 at Highlight Express and Pooten, and LT Express’s £75 buys the larger Grande. The price per volume of posted box tiers sets each posted price against the box’s gross cubic centimetres, a like-for-like view.

US box couriers post sizes and transit windows but no current box price. LBC USA’s rate calculator asks for the origin city and ZIP code (checked 2026-10-25), Manila Forwarder runs an online calculator, Forex eShip’s US page lists box sizes only, and Atlas Shippers refers rate questions to its phone line, chat or local agent. The US courier rates page collects what each one posts, and the same page exists for Canada, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, Italy and the UK.

What the posted price covers

A balikbayan sea price is normally a door-to-door price: collection or drop-off in the sending country, the sailing, Philippine customs handling and the last-mile delivery, all in one figure. Forex Cargo Australia, LT Express, LBC and Manila Express Cargo use the words “door-to-door” on the pages checked, and Bergamo’s says “door to door delivery to anywhere in the Philippines”. Where a price page does not say it, the written quote is where the scope shows up.

Forex Cargo Australia publishes a list of difficult delivery areas where the box goes only as far as “the nearest town proper or pier”, and the receiver needs a contact number to arrange a meet-up; Batanes is listed as no deliveries. Jolly-B marks Ifugao and Mountain Province “not available”. The price grid assumes a road to the door, and these lists name the places where the courier’s delivery stops short of the door.

Why the same box costs more to Visayas and Mindanao

Most price boards that list Philippine areas charge more the farther the box goes; Forex Cargo Australia’s Regular box from Sydney is an exception, AUD 110 to both Manila or Luzon and Visayas or Mindanao. Jolly-B’s Singapore rate image shows the steps for one box across eight areas:

Read across the bars and the jump is S$35 from Metro Manila to Cebu or Davao, and S$65 to a hardport. Those gaps are subtraction from posted prices (derived); Jolly-B names no separate area fee. Palawan Cargo LLC’s UAE board steps the same way in AED: 185 to Metro Manila, 195 to mainland Luzon, 215 to Visayas, 235 to Mindanao and inter-island. In the UK, Highlight Express’s Medium runs from £75 in Area 1 to £100 in Areas 5 to 7.

Palawan Cargo LLC posts 40 to 50 days to Metro Manila and 60 to 90 days to Mindanao and inter-island areas, counted from vessel departure; the box transit page has each corridor’s posted windows.

Where you send from changes the price too

Forex Cargo Australia prices its Regular box by collection suburb, so the same box to Manila or Luzon costs more from Perth or Darwin than from Sydney:

Other couriers post the same pattern in words. LT Express adds £10 to a single Grande collected outside London, and Pooten adds £10 to a Zone 1 Standard; Pooten’s Visayas, Mindanao and Zone 2 Standard prices are the same from outside London. Highlight Express says a surcharge applies outside London without printing the amount. Forex eShip Canada offers free pick-up within the Greater Toronto Area and within Calgary. Bergamo collects free in Bergamo and nearby Milano, Brescia and Cremona provinces and in Piemonte and Emilia; the rest of Italy goes through GLS at a surcharge or at the sender’s own cost. In the US, Manila Forwarder charges a $20 service fee to schedule a pick-up for the sender, and also accepts boxes sent direct to its Los Angeles hub.

Extra charges couriers post on their own sites

These are the lines that appear on a bill beyond the box price. Each comes from the courier’s own page on 19 October 2026; a line with no amount is one the courier names but does not price.

• The empty box, priced separately. Atlas Shippers: Regular $11, Macho $12, JR $5, Travel Box $16, 'please double check the pricing with your local agent'. Manila Forwarder: empty box $10. Palawan Cargo LLC: a line labelled 'Box', AED 32 under the Medium and AED 42 under larger sizes. Bergamo: cartons €4.00 to €5.50, VAT excluded.
• A box deposit. Forex Cargo Australia: AUD 10 per Regular or Premium box on delivery of empty cartons, deducted from the balance at pick-up.
• Pick-up outside the free zone. LT Express: +£10 per single Grande outside London. Pooten: +£10 per Zone 1 Standard outside London. Manila Forwarder: $20 service fee to schedule a pick-up. Highlight Express: surcharge outside London, amount not posted.
• Insurance and declared value. Manila Forwarder: boxes insured up to $200; additional insurance $5 for every $100 of added value. LBC USA: its US terms limit liability to 'a maximum of $100.00 per box unless additional insurance is purchased' and post no insurance price (checked 25 October 2026). Atlas Shippers: liability capped at $200 per Regular or Macho box.
• Electronics and high-value items. Johnny Air Cargo (US): 5% surcharge on items valued at $500 and above, minimum $30 per laptop and $25 per phone or tablet. Johnny Air Cargo Canada: 5% of item value at CAD 500 and above, minimum CAD 35 per laptop, phone or tablet. LBC USA: handling fees on dutiable items such as electronics and small appliances, amount not posted (LBC USA, archived 2026-10-12; its current sea-cargo page does not mention them).
• Heavy boxes. Atlas Shippers: no weight limit, 'however we do charge an extra fee for heavy boxes', amount not posted. Palawan Cargo LLC prints a maximum weight per box size instead.
• Door-to-door delivery on air cargo. Johnny Air Cargo Canada (dollar amounts in CAD per its rates page): $5 in Metro Manila, $10 in listed heavy-traffic areas such as Malabon, Marikina and Valenzuela, $20 for Olongapo, up to $100 for Palawan.
• Paying at the Philippine end. Johnny Air Cargo (US): $5 handling fee if paid in the Philippines; freight paid there is converted to pesos plus 12% VAT.
• Cancelling a pick-up. Jolly-B Box Express: S$10 penalty if a pick-up is cancelled without one day's notice.
• Sales tax. Bergamo prices exclude VAT ('Prices are VAT excluse').

Manila Forwarder’s posted rate of $5 per $100 of added cover means the premium depends on what the sender declares, while the freight stays fixed by box. What a courier’s cover and liability cap actually pay out is a separate question, taken up in is your balikbayan box really insured.

The customs side: the ₱125 processing charge and the duty-free privilege

CAO 01-2018 §4.9 sets a processing charge of ₱125.00 per house bill of lading or house air waybill, “for the availment of the tax and duty exemption”, inclusive of ₱15.00 in customs documentary stamps and a ₱10.00 legal research fee. The same section lets the Commissioner review and revise the amount based on prevailing costs. The CAO ties the charge to the house bill and names no per-box amount.

Duty itself is zero inside the privilege. Under §4.1 and §4.2, a Qualified Filipino While Abroad may send duty- and tax-free boxes up to three times in a calendar year, and the total FCA value of all that sender’s boxes in the year may not exceed ₱150,000. The two ceilings are separate: §7(b) excludes a sender past ₱150,000 even without using three availments, and §7(c) excludes one who has used three even below ₱150,000. Section 3.1 makes “any amount in excess of the allowable non-dutiable and non-taxable value” subject to the applicable duties and taxes. Section 3.2 defines a balikbayan box as a container “up to a maximum volume of two hundred thousand (200,000) gross cubic centimeters”, whatever its shape. That is about 7.1 cubic feet (arithmetic). Several posted jumbo tiers measure above that once their inches are converted, which the weight and size limits page sets out tier by tier.

Section 4.10 makes the deconsolidator answer for government storage, arrastre, demurrage and similar charges in case of implied abandonment of a consolidated shipment.

How the contents touch the bill

Most sea boards above price per box, within the weight limit some of them print, and Manila Express Cargo advertises “unlimited weight”. LBC Qatar’s rate calculator asks for the box’s weight and dimensions, and Atlas Shippers charges an unpriced extra fee for heavy boxes. What goes inside touches the bill through its value: the declared value sets any insurance premium and, at some air couriers, an electronics or high-value surcharge (both Johnny Air Cargo pages post one), and the FCA value counts toward the ₱150,000 calendar-year total under CAO 01-2018 §4.2. Air cargo is the exception, priced per pound or kilo by actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater, as Johnny Air Cargo Canada and Palawan Cargo LLC’s air rates both state.

Reading a quote line by line
